In 2006, the electronic identity card for children under the age of 12 was introduced, the known kids-ID. This document is used to prove the identity of the holder and allows travel in Belgium and other EU countries.
The kids ID also contains expensive certificates that can be used to create a secure online environment, but those applications are hardly used, in my opinion. In addition, the card is only valid for three years, this is unlike the electronic ID card for adults. As a result, the cost price of course goes up.
New technological applications may potentially influence the appearance of the card itself and may potentially also extend its life, and we believe in it. In addition, it can absolutely also save costs. We also believe that a faster processing of all application procedures for the kids ID is possible. We have also made proposals in this regard. Since the kids ID is not mandatory, the application for the card would also, in our opinion, be easier and faster.
There are many issues that are being supported by the majority and the opposition. Hence this resolution. If the vote takes place today and is positive, we hope that the Minister can support this resolution and take the necessary initiatives to do so.
