Rapporteur Peter Luykx ⚙
Mr. Speaker, my colleagues, I will briefly present the report on this agreement. The treaty was approved by 13 votes and one abstinence.
The speech was delivered by colleague De Coninck, by myself, Mr Crusnière and Mr Hellings. Mr Vandenput also had questions about this new treaty.
I would like to emphasize the importance of this agreement, which has been applied in practice since August 2016 and which allows that in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg in the case of repatriations there is no need for unnecessary transfer to the border, but that the police services are free to bring the repatriated on the spot in an efficient and safe manner. Taking into account the international migration context, this Convention has been applicable since August 2016. We consider it an important treaty.
The Minister confirmed that the authorities of one of the three countries, although within the exercise of their mandate and in accordance with the rules of the territory where the repatriation takes place, can transfer people to their destination in another country without administrative or logistical burdens of a transfer. This will save time and increase safety.
The proposal was approved in the committee after one abstinence.
