Mr. Speaker, the proposal aims to amend the law on the integrated police service because in view of a number of mergers of police zones, and accompanied by some mergers of municipalities in Eastern Flanders, we could face complex situations.
More specifically, the municipality of Nevele must defuse from the police zone to join the new zone Deinze. This application has already been made at the end of December 2017. This implies that a KB should be published with new area descriptions of the new police zones. A new police council should be elected within a month.
Given the fact that there will be municipal council elections within a few months and that new police councils should be installed from 1 January 2019, this would lead to complex situations. Then there would also be vacancies for corps chief, police secretary, accountants, and so on.
To avoid all of this, there is this adjustment of the law on the integrated police where the existing municipal councils will exercise the powers for the remaining months.
