Rapporteur Anne Dedry

I will briefly refer to the written report. I just asked an up-to-date question on the topic, so I made my point. Everyone deserves a good night’s sleep in their own bed.

Karin Jiroflée Vooruit

Mr. Speaker, I totally agree with Mrs. Dedry on a good night’s sleep. I will therefore keep it ⁇ brief.

The use of the chemical glyphosate in pesticides has increased significantly in recent years. In the forty-year period, the use increased by a factor of 260 to 825 000 tonnes per year. In addition, 76% of it is used in agriculture. However, a lot of this substance is also spread in the public and private spaces.

The World Health Organization recently concluded that the substance is likely to be carcinogenic to humans. Determining the presence of glyphosate in our bodies, in our foods and even in breast milk should, in our opinion, encourage the Belgian government to apply the precautionary principle.

Within the European institutions, Belgium should advocate not to renew the expired authorisation for the use of the substance.

Furthermore, the Belgian Government should not wait to prohibit the use of glyphosate for private use and for use in public spaces internally within Belgium.

Colleagues, that is the problem and that is also what we aim at regarding the use of glyphosate.

Meanwhile, the dossier has gone a long way. The Minister has briefly outlined, following the question of Mrs. Dedry this afternoon, how that path has gone.

In the meantime, we have also submitted dozens of amendments.

Unfortunately, despite our efforts, the majority remains deaf on that side and refuses to support the resolution.

Despite the words of the minister this afternoon, in which he implicitly indicates that he is also concerned, we see that there is nothing happening in that area because of the government. If the Minister is really so worried, dear members of government, then he must do something. There is a profound gap between what the Minister says and the position of the majority on this resolution. Glyphosate, best government, is poison. Take it out of the shelves, that is the only correct way of acting. The minister still has no ears to it.

Muriel Gerkens Ecolo

Mr. Speaker, I will be ⁇ brief in my speech to insist on my colleagues to reject the rejection of this resolution. This resolution calls for the prohibition of sale to individuals, from now on, and the refusal to extend this authorisation for fifteen years, on the basis of the precautionary principle and due to concern for health and the environment.

We also demanded that this product not be used in public spaces. I regret that this dimension has not been ⁇ ined. The Walloon and Brussels regions have decided to take steps in this direction. The Federal Parliament also expressed itself in this direction for the SNCB land, in order to work with the Regions for the search for alternatives in agriculture.

Dear colleagues, I urge you to reconsider your decision, and that Parliament can take steps to ban the sale and marketing of this product from today.
