Mr. Speaker, Mr. Minister, Colleagues, the VLD will approve the present bill because it meets the desires of the transport sector which the VLD considers to deserve a special treatment and should be favoured.
Mr. Minister, I ask you to pay special attention to tax transport. I have already defended my position on this issue in the committee. Taxi transport, in my opinion, deserves special attention for the sake of two target groups. The first target group is the outgoing youth, the second is the seniors. Everyone knows that the mobility problem is a hot hanging iron. Mobility is ⁇ a problem for the outgoing youth during the weekends. Families are too often faced with fatal road accidents. This leads to terrible dramas. I am breaking a lance so that the youth will have sufficient safe means of transport available, especially during the weekends. At present, public transportation offers insufficient opportunities for this. Taxi transport should, in my opinion, be promoted among young people by making it affordable for young people.
The second target group is the elderly. The society is ageing. Many older people no longer dare to enter the traffic and thus threaten to become isolated. Public transportation does not adequately address these specific needs. As is the case for young people, taxi transportation should be made affordable for seniors. This will contribute to road safety and integration in the social life of both groups. In addition, it can provide a solution to the many parking problems facing especially larger cities.
Mr. Minister, I propose to make taxi transportation more attractive for these two target groups. This can be achieved through a reduction in excise duty. In the committee you answered that this is difficult to ⁇ . A second option is to distribute cheques to these target groups in order to take advantage of taxi transport. Compared to neighboring countries, taxi transport in Belgium is very expensive. If taxi transport is promoted, its use will increase. This increase will not only have a positive impact on the occupation rate among taxi companies, but will also lead to greater competition, which can lead to lower prices. A first step has already been taken at the Flemish level. Think of the TOV ticket, which is a collaboration between De Lijn and the taxi companies.
Mr. Minister, I remind you of your promise to find a solution to this problem. Cheap and affordable taxi transportation for young people and seniors benefits a large social group and can prevent a lot of human dramas.
