President Siegfried Bracke

Mr Luykx, rapporteur, refers to the written report.

Dirk Van der Maelen Vooruit

Mr. Speaker, I have already, in the committee with the colleagues of the Greens and PS, extensive speeches against the fact that the government proposes us to conclude a treaty on the exchange of information with Bermuda.

We are against it because through such actions Belgium makes itself complicit in granting respectfulness to a notorious tax paradise. Furthermore, we thus contradict the OECD’s explicit wish that, for the purpose 6 of the BEPS program, calls on the OECD Member States to be ⁇ careful with the current conclusion of tax agreements with tax havens. In the committee, we tried with the united opposition to bring the government majority to other insights. Unfortunately, this has not succeeded.

Colleagues, you can’t be proud of this: we give respect to a notorious tax haven and we go against the internationally organized struggle against tax fraud through tax havens. We are complicit in this. We deeply regret this.

Minister Didier Reynders

We have had a long debate on this in the committee. I would like to refer to the responses in the Committee.

The exchange of information and intelligence is very important, including with those countries. That’s why we said we should go in that direction.
