Here is my brief report.
This draft law aims to authorise the Minister of Finance to grant loans to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg for a maximum of EUR 160 million, of course within the framework of the participation of the Belgian government in the acquisition procedure of Kaupthing Bank nv.
The intention is, of course, to unblock the savings of the more than 20,000 Belgian customers of Kaupthing.
The Minister of Finance confirms that the acquisition of the bank removes the absolute preference of the government. The government will also continue to make efforts to reverse the still-neutral rejection of the acquisition by bank creditors.
The Minister of Finance also reaffirms that in the event of bankruptcy the Belgian government is prepared to cover together with the Luxembourg government the funds of the savers up to 100,000 euros, which is a clear and important commitment.
The entire bill was finally unanimously approved.
