Mirella Minne Ecolo

Mr. Speaker, dear colleagues, the concept of veteran is introduced in this proposal in order to provide a legal basis for the status of national recognition for the benefit of members and former members of staff of the Department of Defense who have participated in many operations since the end of hostilities in Korea. For them, there was until now no recognition mark similar to those established for the former fighters of the two World Wars and the Korean War. Veterans shall be considered as members of the staff of the Department of Defense who have participated in the operations which shall be determined by royal decree. We hope that this notion of veteran which is left to the King's judgment will be fixed precisely. This definition is, indeed, important for the legal certainty of the many military personnel sent on mission abroad.

Along with the creation of this veteran status, it is also necessary to establish the instruments that will later enable an effective response to medical, psychological or social problems that may arise in the coming years.

This status will allow veterans to continue their role of guardians of memory played so far by patriotic associations. We invite you to vote on this proposal with us.
