Mr Wilrycx and Mrs Smaers, rapporteurs, refer to the written report.

Mr. Speaker, I would like to speak very briefly to thank, once again, the parliamentarians of the majority for having agreed to return the text to the committee last week, and thus allowing it to be further improved by incorporating an amendment which I presented at the Conference of Presidents and which was co-signed by others, the aim of this amendment being that this text can enter into force faster than originally planned.

The intention and content were good. Today, the schedule is accelerated. I am very pleased with this and I wanted to report this at the end of the day.

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank my colleagues for their support for this legislative initiative, which I think is appropriate.

The law of 1988 was already a very good thing to ensure the continuity of the farms through the preferential right of acquisition. This law, however, was somewhat caught up by the reality, which requires that farms are taken over already before the farmer’s death. This resulted in practical problems.

We have now developed a scheme that also gives a preferential right of acquisition in the event of an early transfer. It can also be opted for leaving only part of the property. This way we adapt to the current situation and can avoid a lot of legal disputes in families.

With this initiative, which I think is very praiseworthy, we can ensure the necessary continuity for this important business economic activity.
