I am referring to my written report.

Of course, we support this text. We have also signed the proposal. Their
I have a question about the Board of Directors. In the past, political prisoners were involved in the management of the memorial. My question to the Minister is, therefore, how he will resolve that matter in the new law.
President Herman De Croo ⚙
Can the second question also be asked? Are there other registered?
Mr Wauters, you have the word.

Mr. Speaker, Mr. Minister, you know that we are strong supporters of this bill and want to support you in this regard. You gave the starting shot to give the national memorial of Breendonk more shape and a more modern shape. Both conceptually and museologically, the monument will be important to pass on the history of war in a pedagogical way to the children.
The monument is also a national monument. Both French-speaking, Dutch-speaking and Brussels people have "stayed" in the camp of Breendonk. It is a memorial to the atrocities of the Nazis. It is also a tribute to the resistance that has arisen during this period. This tribute must be permanent.
This week I saw the work at the Fort of Breendonk. Mr. Minister, I think what you have put in place is good. Therefore, it is also necessary to have a strong board of directors. This is achieved with this bill. This week I also had a conversation with people who were imprisoned in the camp. Their question is how they can be permanently represented in the Board of Directors that is now being created. I hear that until now the board of directors was in the hands of either the survivors of the camp of Breendonk, or their relatives in direct line. We now reserve eight places for different lines. These places are reserved for those who want to honor the memory. However, it is also of fundamental importance that prisoners and their children continue to be directly involved in the board of directors of the Fort of Breendonk. We need to maintain this important link.
We support you. We also believe that it is of the utmost importance to transmit the whole Holocaust idea to the youth.
Minister André Flahaut ⚙
Mr. Speaker, during this legislature, considerable efforts have been made to modernize the Fort of Breendonk: the facilities have been renovated, we have made sure that there is a real project for the reception, especially young visitors. This fort is indeed a place of memory that must absolutely be ⁇ ined.
It was also necessary to expand the board of directors and involve in the discussions not only the Department of Defense but also provincial, municipal and community authorities. Thus, a large number of officials will invest in the maintenance and development of this place of memory in our country. You will therefore easily understand that I have no problem in committing myself, before the Chamber, to what is taken into account — and I will take into account — for the constitution of the board of administration, of the situation of political prisoners and of their descendants. It will ensure that they continue to be represented there.
