Finally, there will be more financial flexibility for our elderly residing in rest homes. Our bill, on the agenda today, will allow them to distribute the management of their pocket money as they wish. It is a very concrete proposal inspired by the terrain, which will directly facilitate the lives of residents.
As confirmed by the Organic Act of the CPAS of 8 July 1976, residents of rest homes who receive social assistance already receive an annual amount of pocket money payable so far in a single time or by monthly payments. Current amounts are 1 211,31 euros per year or 100,94 euros per month. Such amounts of cash in a resident’s room can trigger craving and thus theft, and sometimes even violent aggression, especially against the most vulnerable people. Our proposal now allows the payment of this pocket money on a weekly basis. Of course, this will only happen if the recipient wants to.
The goal, as I said, is greater flexibility, less money in resident rooms and therefore less risk of theft and assault. This is a demand that comes from the ground, I repeat. The CPAS Federation has been demanding this since 2009. It should be remembered that some CPAS already practice this, even though the legislation did not yet allow it. This is now done. As soon as the proposal is voted, unanimously I hope, as in the committee, it can be put into place. I would like to thank my competent colleagues from other political formations for their constructive work in the Social Affairs Committee.
